Lane diversions to accommodate MyCiTi construction work along Turfhall Road

Road users are advised that the City’s Urban Mobility Directorate will soon implement lane diversions along Turfhall Road (M24) in the Lansdowne area, as well as a four-way stop, to accommodate construction work related to the roll-out of the MyCiTi bus service to the metro-south east. These interventions will cause delays, and road users are encouraged to use alternative routes, or factor in additional traveling time.

In May this year, the City's Urban Mobility Directorate commenced with major construction work along Turfhall Road (M24) from the intersection with the M5 freeway in the west to the intersection with Castor and Benona Roads in the east.

The impacted section is 1,7 km in distance. Pending any delays or unforeseen challenges, the project will be complete by July 2027.

Work is currently happening along the Turf Hall Road median island, from the intersection with Castor and Benona Roads through to the M5, to prepare the area for the construction of the two dedicated bus lanes that will be located in the median of Turfhall Road.

Thus, the next phase of the construction work requires temporary lane diversions, and the implementation of a four-way stop street. These measures will be implemented in coming days, and effective until July 2025:

The lane diversions will be implemented along Turfhall Road between the M5 freeway and the intersection with Castor and Benona Roads
The westbound lanes serving traffic towards the M5 freeway will be closed to traffic
The westbound traffic will be diverted along two new lanes within the old centre median
Dual traffic lanes will be accommodated in both directions
A four-way stop street will be implemented along Turfhall Road at the intersection with Civic Road and Woodbury Road
Temporary public transport stops will be implemented along the reconfigured road
Temporary walkways and pedestrian crossings will be implemented as well
The implementation of the lane diversions will be undertaken in phases over coming days

'The interventions will be needed for nearly a year while we are busy with the construction of the infrastructure that is needed for the roll-out of the MyCiTi bus service. We are very aware of the traffic delays and associated frustrations that may arise during this time. Unfortunately, construction work always comes with a level of inconvenience and disruptions to traffic flow.

'We are doing all we can to minimise the impact, but I want to caution residents upfront to anticipate congestion. Our project managers are continuously liaising with the contractor, and monitoring the work on site. I kindly request all to please adhere to the flag personnel's instructions, and the signage around the work areas – these are in the interest of the safety and security of all,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

Roll-out of Phase 2A of the MyCiTi bus service

The roll-out of the second phase of the MyCiTi bus service to the metro-south east is a mammoth undertaking.

Over the next three financial years, the City will have a number of major construction projects ongoing to implement the dedicated red bus lanes, stations and stops; and improvements to roads and transport facilities to bring scheduled, affordable, safe, and reliable public transport service to over 30 communities.

'Multiple construction projects are currently under way in many of the areas already. With the latest project along Turfhall Road I want to thank communities and road users for their ongoing support,' said Councillor Quintas.

Turfhall Road project detail:

Reconstruction of two eastbound and two westbound lanes along Turfhall Road, with turning lanes at the intersections with the M5/Racecourse Road; Chukker Road and Sir Alfred Avenue; Woodbury and Civic Roads; and Flamingo Road in the west
Construction of two dedicated bus lanes in the median of Turfhall Road
Construction of walkways and cycle lanes on both sides of Turfhall Road
Relocation and upgrade of bulk water mains and sewer mains
Improvements to traffic signals and drainage, and new road markings

The construction work is being done in phases.

Planned work:

The road reserve along the northern side of Turfhall Road is impacted first given the relocation of the underground services – such as water mains, sewer mains, and stormwater infrastructure, starting at the M5 and working towards the direction of Flamingo and Benona Roads
The first phase concerns the widening of the road shoulder, reconstruction of the median along Turfhall Road, and construction of walking and cycle lanes
The second phase concerns the construction of the westbound carriageway (two lanes) towards the M5 and Dalewood Road
The third phase concerns the construction of the eastbound carriageway towards Jan Smuts Drive
The fourth phase concerns the construction of the two dedicated bus lanes in the median

The work is taking place between 09:00 and 15:00 on weekdays to minimise the impact on road users during peak periods; and work on weekends and public holidays may happen as and when needed.
